JAMES NIEDEL, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Niedel is a Managing Director of New Leaf Ventures. He joined Sprout as a Venture Partner in May, 2002. Prior to that appointment, he was Chief Science and Technology Officer for GlaxoSmithKline and from 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the board of directors of Glaxo Wellcome plc with responsibility for Global Research and Development, Information Technology and Product Strategy. From 1988 to 1995 he was VP Research and SVP R&D for the US subsidiary of Glaxo.
Before joining the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Niedel was Professor of Medicine and Chief of the division of Clinical Pharmacology at Duke Medical School, where he had completed an Internal Medicine residency and a Hematology-Oncology fellowship. He received the M.D. and Ph.D. (Biochemistry) degrees from the University of Miami, was selected a Searle Scholar, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London).
ERIC AGUIAR, M.D.
Dr. Aguiar joined Thomas, McNerney and Partners in 2007. From 2001-2007 he was a Managing Director of HealthCare Ventures, a health care focused venture capital firm. Dr. Aguiar was chief executive officer of Genovo, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company that specialized in gene delivery and gene regulation. He was also executive director of TheraTech, Inc. which Watson Pharmaceuticals acquired in 1999. Prior to that he was a vice-president and managing director of Philadelphia Ventures, from 1992 to 1997.
Dr. Aguiar is a member of the board of overseers of the Tufts School of Medicine. He received his medical degree with honors from Harvard Medical School in 1989. He graduated with honors from Cornell University in 1984 and was a Luce Fellow in 1984-85. He obtained his CFA designation in 1998.
MITCHELL A. BARAN, H.B.A., F.C.A.
Mr. Baran is Chairman of Trudell Medical Group, a family owned global healthcare company that carries on activities in product development, manufacturing and distribution of medical products in Canada, the US and internationally. Mr. Baran is past Chairman of the Medical Devices Advisory Council and Med Tech Canada. He is also a past member of the Ontario Health Industry Advisory Committee (HIAC) and the Health Industries Development Council (HIDCO), both medical industry initiatives of the Province of Ontario. Mr. Baran is director of a number of Canadian and US companies and has been a member of Oriel’s Board of Directors since the company’s inception.
Mr. Baran, an alumnus of the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School of Business, is also a Chartered Accountant and has been inducted as a Fellow of the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants.
MYLES D. GREENBERG, M.D.
Dr. Greenberg has been a Partner with CHL Medical Partners since 2004. Prior to joining CHL, he was a Senior Principal at A.M. Pappas & Associates (now Pappas Ventures). Before working in venture capital, Myles served on the faculty of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School as Assistant Clinical Director of the emergency department.
Dr. Greenberg is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science, Yale University School of Medicine, and Harvard Business School. He completed residency training in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
DOUGLAS E. ONSI
Mr. Onsi s a Venture Partner of HealthCare Ventures. Prior to joining HealthCare Ventures in 2007, he served as Vice President, Campath Product Operations & Oncology Portfolio Management and as Vice President, Business Development at Genzyme Corporation.
Before joining Genzyme, Mr. Onsi was Chief Financial Officer and Vice President, Business Development of TolerRx, Inc., a company in which HealthCare Ventures was the lead investor. Prior to TolerRx, he held a senior business development position at LeukoSite, Inc., another HealthCare Ventures portfolio company, which was merged with Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He has also practiced corporate law at Bingham Dana LLP.
